GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Today, Tuesday, December 5, would have been the late Robert Sobukwe’s 93rd birthday.
Sobukwe was born in Graaff-Reinet on December 5, 1924.
Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was a prominent South African political dissident, who founded the Pan Africanist Congress in opposition to South Africa under Apartheid.
In 2004 Sobukwe was voted 42nd in the SABC3's Great South Africans.
Due to lung cancer, Sobukwe was hospitalised in 1977.
He died on February 27, 1978, and was buried in Graaff-Reinet on 11 March 1978.
