OUDTSHOORN NEWS - A police officer attached to the Oudtshoorn Police College was seriously injured in an accident on the Schoemanshoek dirt road last week.
Vussi Marenene (42), a well-known cyclist and member of the Oudtshoorn Cycling Club, was riding his mountain bike on Thursday 10 February when he was hit by the trailer of a passing vehicle.
According to captain Louis Visser, media liaison officer for the police, a case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated.
Marenene was taken to a hospital in Oudtshoorn but was transported to a hospital in George shortly after.
According to his wife, Liya (36), he is still in ICU and had two operations.
"He was seriously injured. He fractured both arms and some of his ribs. He also has serious neck and spinal injuries but can use his arms a bit. He still can not use his legs. According to his specialist, he will be in hospital for one more week after which he will be transferred to a rehab centre in either Cape Town or Port Elizabeth."
Marenene has been cycling for nine years and is a fitness instructor at the police college.
Liya says they are praying for a full recovery.
