OUDTSHOORN NEWS - An integrated law enforcement operation targeting spaza shops in Bridgton and Bongolethu on Tuesday 9 June resulted in the arrest of 10 undocumented foreign nationals and one employer for alleged contraventions of South Africa’s immigration legislation.
The operation was conducted jointly by the Oudtshoorn Police, Oudtshoorn Municipal Law Enforcement, the Oudtshoorn Fire Brigade, and officials from the Department of Home Affairs’ Immigration Services.
Several spaza shops in the two neighbourhoods were inspected during the operation.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies, confirmed the arrests.
“The arrested persons remain in police custody and are expected to appear in court on Thursday 11 June. These arrests form part of ongoing operations aimed at addressing illegal activities,” said Spies.
He added that the joint task team also conducted compliance inspections at nine spaza shops during the operation.
According to Spies, similar operations are currently being carried out in other areas across the region as part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
The Oudtshoorn Municipality declined to comment on the operation.
