OUDTSHOORN NEWS - As part of its ongoing community outreach programme, the Oudtshoorn Infantry School celebrated Nelson Mandela Day at the Ithemba Homeless Shelter in Oudtshoorn.
In 2025, the Infantry School completed a comprehensive refurbishment project at the shelter, valued at R1.25m.
With this project, the shelter’s capacity was expanded, enabling it to accommodate up to 52 individuals in need. The refurbishment included the purchase of new beds, furniture, bedding and electrical appliances. The project improved the shelter’s infrastructure by renovating two administrative offices, four dormitories, the kitchen, living room and several bathrooms.
In addition, a new building with its own ablution facilities was constructed for the men, allowing male and female residents to live separately for the first time. The grounds were landscaped and 10 trees were planted at the unveiling.
This year, the Oudtshoorn Infantry School continued its involvement with the Ithemba Homeless Shelter by donating groceries and toiletries for the residents.
The day commenced with an official parade. Major General Viscount Zwelithini Ngcobo touched on the importance of the day. “This day reminds us that true leadership is measured not only by what we achieve, but by the difference we make in the lives of others. The South African Army Infantry Formation is proud to stand alongside the people of Oudtshoorn in serving those who need our support. As soldiers, our commitment extends beyond defending the borders of our country. We are equally committed to serving the communities we have sworn to protect.”
He concluded by acknowledging the South African Army Engineer Formation. “I am particularly pleased that our contribution does not end today. The South African Army’s engineers have already commenced renovation work at Ithemba House, ensuring a safer, more dignified and functional environment for its residents. This demonstrates our commitment to creating a lasting impact rather than a once-off gesture.”
Mayor thanks SANDF
Mziwoxola Zoe Tyatya, Oudtshoorn’s mayor, deliverd a heartfelt speech, thanking the SANDF for their involvement at the shelter. “Today we stand together, soldiers, public servants and community members, under the gaze of Madiba’s legacy and in the spirit of service he demanded of all of us. Today’s event gives practical meaning to that call. Homelessness is not just a social challenge, it’s a human reality that demands compassion and responsibility. Behind every person in need is a life story, a family and a desire for dignity, safety and belonging.”
Tyatya continued to mention that as a caring society, the duty is not to turn away, but to respond with empathy, practical support and sustained commitment.
“The municipality recognises that shelters such as Ithemba are essential partners in responding to poverty, vulnerability and homelessness. The name ‘Ithemba’ means hope, and that hope is visible in the care shown to some of the most vulnerable members of our society. The shelter stands as a reminder that when institutions, government, faith communities, donors and residents work together, lives can be changed.”
The mayor concluded with a message to the residents of Ithemba Homeless Shelter. “You are seen, you matter, you are part of the community. This shelter is not the end of your journey, but a place of safety, support and renewed possibility. May it become a place where strength is restored, hope is renewed and new beginnings are made possible.”
