Van Aswegen (25) was due to represent Griquas this year after playing for the embattled Eastern Province Kings in this year’s Super Rugby tournament.
He joined the Kings on a one-month trial period in June 2014 and subsequently signed a deal that would see him form part of the team during 2016.
Like most of the Kings players, Van Aswegen struggled to get his salary and this influenced his decision to wear the number 10 jersey for Griquas.
During his short yet promising career, Van Aswegen had six knee operations before finally deciding to rather focus on his business interests.
Losing the flyhalf was a huge setback for the Peacock Blues.
“I spoke to him and he would have signed (a contract) to join us,” Griquas coach Peter Engledow said in an interview with Netwerk24.
“It is a huge disappointment that we could not get him to sign the contract because I put in a lot of hard work to get him on board.”
