PRINCE ALBERT NEWS - Sport development in Prince Albert received a welcome incentive of R678 000 from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport on 14 May.
This allocation of funds, is of particular benefit to the growth of netball in the municipal area of Prince Albert, says the municipal manager Adv. Thys Giliomee.
The funds will be applied towards the construction of a Nu-Tec ablution and change room facility at the Sydwell Williams Sports Centre.
"This investment is more than just infrastructure. It is an investment in dignity, development, inclusion and opportunity for our sporting community. For many years, our netball players, both male and female, had to rely on alternative facilities such as the swimming pool or existing Sydwell Williams Centre toilets to change before and after matches and training sessions. The construction of a dedicated facility will therefore bring much-needed relief and improved conditions for our local clubs and visiting teams," said Giliomee.
There are currently two active netball clubs in Prince Albert that utilise the facility extensively during the week for practice sessions and regularly host friendly and league matches.
The new ablution facilities will be a significant contribution to offer a more professional, safe and welcoming environment for athletes, officials and spectators.
According to Giliomee, the municipality has already commenced with the procurement process for Phase 1 of the project. This phase consists of the laying of a foundation, the connection of water, electricity and sewer infrastructure, as well as addressing stormwater management and beautification of the surrounding area.
"Projects such as these demonstrate the value of collaboration between spheres of government and the positive impact it can have on local communities. We trust that this facility will encourage greater participation in sport, empower our youth and strengthen social cohesion within Prince Albert," says Giliomee.
The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, visited Prince Albert to hand over the cheque for the amount of R678 000.
