It was the first year that Athletics SWD presented the PetroSA Marathon. Moses Ge-ricke, President of ASWD, said they had a record amount of entries this year but for the next two years they want to grow this event, even not only in numbers, but also in quality and status.
"We have already started by lifting the status to an international level. All three distances - the 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km - will become A.I.M.S. certified routes.
"The event already attracts a lot of neighbouring African countries and next year want to have even more entries from abroad as well as from all our top local runners."
Gericke said their new strategy and plans going forward will be announced at their official press conference in February 2014.
ASWD also handed over a R5000 donation to the Benevolent Park Old Age home in Mossel Bay.
Athletics SWD and Decti Raising-the-Bar simultaneously also honoured their top athletes for their excellent performances this year.
