GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, has announced the temporary closure of schools in certain areas of the Eden and Central Karoo Education District following severe rainfall warnings.
According to Kerry Mauchline, Spokesperson for Minister David Maynier, the decision was taken in the interest of learner and teacher safety after consultation with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
“All public ordinary and special needs schools in Circuits 3 and 8 (George), Circuit 4 (Knysna), Circuits 5 and 6 (Oudtshoorn) will be closed on Wednesday 6 May and Thursday 7 May.”
All other schools in the Western Cape will remain open unless specific approval for closure is granted on a case-by-case basis.
Maynier emphasised that the department’s default position is to keep schools open wherever possible, with closures implemented only under exceptional circumstances.
“We are mindful of the severity of the weather warnings currently in place and will continue to monitor and assess the situation,” he said.
Schools affected by the closure are expected to reopen on Friday 8 May although weather forecasts will be reviewed later in the week to determine whether any further individual school closures may be necessary.
The following Oudtshoorn and Klein Karoo schools will be closed:
