Van Rensburg had been banned from leaving the EG after a plane brokerage deal between his company and a EG senator Mba Bela Angabi’s airline, Corisair went sour during 2014. An EG judge later threw the case out of court and he was free to go.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation intervened and the G ambassador to South Africa, Francisco Edu Ngua Mangue was called to Pretoria.
During this meeting, the department expressed their concern for Daniel and his treatment at the hands of the EG police. According to the Department’s Spokesperson, Nelson Kgwete, diplomats at the South African Embassy in Malabo had also brought the matter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Justice’s attention during 2014.
Despite all this, Van Rensburg has been rearrested twice and has spent two years in the EG.
He told the George Herald why he now fears for his life: “This man is evil, even the SA Embassy staff were intimidated. There is no doubt he [Angabi] wanted to harm me or even wanted to kill me. Now that he knows that he has lost, he has become desperate.”
