NATIONAL NEWS - Sentencing proceedings in the trial of Poppie van der Merwe’s mother and stepfather are expected to go ahead in the High Court in Pretoria on Thursday.
Poppie’s mother, Louisa Koekemoer, 47, and stepfather Kobus Koekemoer, 44, have been convicted of the abuse and murder of Poppie and abuse of a five-year-old boy.
Kobus Koekemoer, Poppie’s stepfather, allegedly kicked her to death at a farm in Mamogaleskraal near Brits on October 25, 2016, she died on arrival in hospital.
He was arrested in October 2016, and Louisa was arrested on December 15, 2016, after a post-mortem indicated that Poppie had died from a severe brain haemorrhage caused by a blunt object. Police arrested her when she told police a different version of what had happened.
