A local private investigation agency issued a notice saying “because of new gun laws and stricter rules regarding ammunition, hijackers have turned their attention to using pool acid. The acid is kept in a syringe or small plastic container and then used to blind, daze and disorientate the driver of the vehicle. It also assists them with getting away from the scene more readily.”
The warning is backed up by a report of a Discovery Health employee who was allegedly involved in an attempted hijacking in Rivonia.
According to the report the victim’s vehicle was approached by a “young, perfectly nice-looking white guy who convinced him to roll down his window”. The would-be hijacker demanded his vehicle and then threw pool acid in his face. The man’s face was allegedly burned extensively and the “membranes have been burned off his eyes”.
