Western Cape weather warning: Cold, wet and windy conditions expected on 3 and 4 September

LOCAL NEWS - The Western Cape Government is urging residents to take precautions ahead of adverse weather conditions forecast for later this week.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall over parts of the province, particularly the Overberg and Garden Route districts.

Rainfall accumulations of between 30mm and 45mm are expected in affected areas.

The warning was discussed during a Joint Operations Committee meeting at the Provincial Disaster Management Centre on Tuesday, 1 September.

Strong winds and rough seas expected

In addition to the rainfall, strong winds are forecast over parts of the Central Karoo, Little Karoo and Cape Winelands.

Hazardous sea conditions and high waves are also expected along large parts of the Western Cape coastline.

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is monitoring the weather system and remains in contact with SAWS to assess any changes to the forecast.

Residents urged to take precautions

Residents are advised to:

Avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and low-water crossings.
Stay away from rivers, streams and stormwater channels during heavy rainfall.
Secure loose outdoor items that could be blown away by strong winds.
Exercise caution near the coastline, where rough seas and high waves are expected.
Follow updates from the Western Cape Government, local municipalities and SAWS.

Emergency services on standby

Western Cape Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, said the provincial government remains in close contact with municipalities and emergency response agencies to ensure they are prepared should conditions deteriorate.

Residents are urged to remain alert, as weather systems can change rapidly, and to monitor official communication channels for further updates.
