OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Community and sector stakeholders are invited to attend the second meeting of the Grobbelaars River Maintenance Management Plan (MMP) steering committee tomorrow evening, Tuesday 8 September.
The meeting will take place at Cango Wildlife at 18:00.
The MMP is aimed at establishing a framework for the responsible maintenance, rehabilitation and long-term management of the Grobbelaars River, particularly after rehabilitation work has been completed.
Cango Wildlife is co-ordinating the process on behalf of the private sector.
According to Douglas Eriksen, CEO of Cango Wildlife, the organisation is committed to maintaining momentum in the process and ensuring that all stakeholders receive clear and timely communication about progress, upcoming meetings and engagements with the relevant authorities.
Tomorrow’s meeting will focus on establishing sector representation in the steering committee. Stakeholders will elect one representative and one alternate from each sector.
The draft Terms of Reference for the steering committee will also be reviewed. Dr Nina Viljoen, head of Environmental Management at the Garden Route District Municipality, will attend the meeting in person.
The first community and sector meeting was held in August and focused on beginning the process of identifying representatives from the various sectors affected by the Grobbelaars River.
The process involves engagement with relevant environmental and municipal authorities.
The previous meeting included representatives from CapeNature, the Breede-Olifants Catchment Management Agency (Bocma), the provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, and the Oudtshoorn Municipality’s Department of Development and Planning.
Stakeholders who have not yet submitted nominations for a sector representative can do so before 12:00 tomorrow via the nomination form.

Community participation is encouraged to ensure that the interests of all affected sectors are represented in the development and future management of the Grobbelaars River.
