KNYSNA NEWS - Aubrey Tsengwa, former mayor of Knysna and current ANC Ward 8 councillor, has reportedly been shot dead last night, 19 August.
Tsengwa served as Knysna’s executive mayor from August 2022 until February 2025.
He was removed from this position on 14 February 2025 following a successful motion of no confidence.
He subsequently resigned as a councillor on 31 March 2025.
Tsengwa returned to the Knysna Municipal Council after contesting the Ward 8 by-election on 25 June 2025 as the ANC candidate, securing about 51.5% of the vote.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the exact location and motive, have not yet been confirmed.
Unconfirmed information indicates the incident might have occurred in the Joodsekamp area as Tsengwa was on his way home.
In a statement, an ANC member, Phumla Thole described Tsengwa’s death as a tragic passing.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the tragic passing of Cde Aubrey Tsengwa, who was shot and killed last night. We convey our deepest condolences to his family, comrades, friends and all those who worked closely with him during this difficult time. We mourn the loss of a fellow cadre and revolutionary whose contribution will forever remain part of our collective memory.

DA councillor Jason White also expressed his condolences, describing Tsengwa’s death as a painful reminder of the vulnerability faced by public representatives.
White said the two had served on opposite sides of the council chamber and had differed on a number of issues, but had been able to debate and challenge one another respectfully.
“Cllr Tsengwa was quite a character,” White said, adding that their political differences had never prevented them from working together when circumstances required it.
The Knysna PA also conveyed its condolences, describing Tsengwa as a people’s person with strong communication skills and a strong and challenging character. “You will surely be missed,” the party said.
