OUDTSHOORN NEWS : A fire broke out earlier today in the mountainous area north-east of Oudtshoorn and, driven by strong south-easterly winds, rapidly developed into a wild and fast-spreading fire.
Currently, the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) crew are actively fighting the accessible south westerly fireline, which are closest to infrastructure.
GRDM Fire and Rescue Services crew are currently actively fighting the accessible south westerly fireline, which poses the greatest risk to nearby infrastructure.
At this stage, the fire area is only accessible by off-road 4x4 light-duty vehicles. A combination of fire beating and water suppression is currently utlised to suppress the accessible areas.
The northern fireline remains inaccessible, is completely out of control, and has crossed several ridges. Wind conditions are currently moderate, with intermittent gusts.
GRDM’s night-shift crew will relieve the current teams on the fireline. Ground crews will resume suppression and mop-up operations in accessible areas from 06:00 tomorrow morning.
