GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Most cemeteries in Graaff-Reinet have been allocated to churches, but unlike the other cemeteries, the one in Adendorp is the responsibility of the municipality.
It is thought to have been established in the early 1900s and is home to around 300 graves.
According to Brummers Funeral Directors, the deterioration and vandalism have been particularly evident in the last two years.
The matter of the lack of maintenance of the cemetery was brought up by Ward 7 councillor Rudy Jacobs in a meeting he instigated with the municipal manager in early November, to deal with this and several other matters in the ward.
As well as overgrown areas with a proliferation of weeds, Jacobs informed the municipal manager about the thoroughfare that had been created by residents when they went to the outskirts of the area to collect wood.
This was marked as an immediate area to be rectified, but more than four months later, all that has happened is that the weeds and grasses have grown even higher.
