WESTERN CAPE NEWS - Since the start of winter, the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) has never had stock to last more than one or two days. This situation can be critical for patients who need blood transfusions. The WPBTS aims to maintain a level of five days' stock as a "safe" level.
The WPBTS is calling on everyone in the Western Cape who are eligible to donate blood.
"WPBTS is still experiencing critically low blood stocks levels. We need donors who are eligible to donate, to make a life-changing commitment and make the difference in someone's life," says Michelle Vermeulen, corporate public relations officer at WPBTS.
Persons between the ages of 16 and 65, weighing more than 50kg, who are in general good health and lead a safe lifestyle, are eligible to donate blood. Donors must remember to eat a substantial meal within three to four hours before donating.
While donors from all blood groups are important, there is a particular need for donors with blood types O and B to donate, as stocks of these are more vulnerable to shortfalls.
For more information, SMS "Blood" to 33507 and WPBTS will call you back with information on where to donate. Donors can also call 021 507 6300, e-mail info@wpbts.org.za or visit www.wpblood.org.za.

Your one donation can save up to three people's lives.
