NATIONAL NEWS - Soaring above the African savannah with eyes capable of spotting prey from up to three kilometres away, the martial eagle is one of Africa’s most powerful raptors.
Now, the majestic apex predator has been immortalised in gold and silver by the South African Mint with the launch of the 2026 Martial Eagle collection.
The release is the second instalment in the acclaimed Odyssey of the Sky seven-coin series, which celebrates some of the continent’s most remarkable birds through world-class craftsmanship and design.
Celebrating Africa's extraordinary birdlife
South African Mint Managing Director Richard Collocott said the series is about more than producing collectable coins.
“The Odyssey of the Sky is more than a coin series; it is a celebration of Africa’s extraordinary birdlife and the artistry that brings these stories to life through world-class minting.
“With the Martial Eagle, we continue the journey, offering collectors another beautifully crafted chapter in a series that is fast becoming one of our most distinctive modern collections,” said Collocott.
Limited-edition martial eagle coins
The collection is struck in 24-carat gold and fine silver, with designs inspired by the martial eagle’s strength and character.
Continuing the series’ distinctive visual identity, each coin incorporates a signature African pattern symbolising the enduring connection between humanity and nature.
“With strictly limited mintages across the range, the 2026 Martial Eagle collection marks the next sought-after chapter in The Odyssey of the Sky,” the South African Mint said in a statement.
Exclusive Martial Eagle and Krugerrand sets
A major highlight of the 2026 release is the inclusion of two highly exclusive coin sets.
The special editions pair an Odyssey of the Sky Martial Eagle coin with South Africa’s world-famous Krugerrand, featuring a uniquely minted martial eagle privy mark.
The Mint said the sets make for a distinctive addition to the collection.
Seven-year journey through Africa's skies
The Odyssey of the Sky will unfold through seven annual releases, with each coin telling the story of an extraordinary bird while showcasing the South African Mint’s focus on craftsmanship, innovation and design excellence.
The 2026 Martial Eagle release continues that journey, offering collectors a limited-edition tribute to one of Africa’s most formidable birds of prey.
