GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - Amidst the challenges and restrictions brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, a handful of journalists from Group Editors recently excelled at the 2020 FCJ Excellence Awards.
The top achievers were announced during an online presentation on Friday, 3 December.
Hugo Redelinghuys, former sport editor of George Herald and current editor of sister publication Graaff-Reinet Advertiser, was named as the national sport writer of the year for 2020, an award not strange to him.
Blake Linder, journalist at Knysna-Plett Herald, was a finalist in the sport writing category and earned top 10 spots in the categories for hard news, best column and journalist of the year.
In the sport photos category, Redelinghuys had three photos in the top 10, more than any other journalist who entered.
Knysna-Plett Herald won the category best front pages (corporate-owned paid newspapers) while George Herald was a top 10 finalist.
In the category for best newspapers for the Cronwright Trophy (paid newspapers with a circulation above 5 000), George Herald took third place.
