SOUTHERN CAPE NEWS - Today is International Nurses Day. This day is celebrated across the world during this month of May and it’s also a day to celebrate the anniversary of the founder of modern day nursing, Florence Nightingale's birthday.

This year’s celebration under the theme Nurses: A force for Change: Care, Effective, Cost Effective focuses more on action to strengthen and improve health systems not only in South Africa but around the world. It strengthens the notion of commitment to change health systems in the country to achieve better health outcomes for all.
In celebrating the day, the Western Cape Department of Health wish to draw attention to the invaluable role nurses play in delivering quality healthcare to the Western Cape community. We salute the nurses of the Western Cape and celebrate those who contribute so immensely of themselves to improve the health and lives of others in need.
Staff nurse Evangeline Allers said her passion for nursing started when she and her mother helped patients in state hospitals who could not feed themselves when there was not enough nurses.
“I developed a love and compassion for the patients. There is always a need to show compassion towards our patients. Our work is very rewarding. If I get to do it over again I would and know I will enjoy it as much again”.
The Western Cape Government Health will also hold mini celebrations across the province and in the services to ensure that nurses get the treatment they deserve.
