GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - The Eden and Central Karoo Education District achieved an average matric pass rate of 83,5%.
This is slightly lower (0,9%) compared with 2021, but district director Jewel Jonkers said he is grateful that the class of 2022 made it through three very difficult years.
"They were in Grade 10 in 2020 and we were fearing that they might be put back a year, but they made it. Matric is the culmination of 13 years for every matric learner. We are grateful firstly to the Lord and then parents, teachers, businesspeople, governing bodies and principals for their contribution. As we know, education is a whole-of-society matter."
The district's average pass rate is higher than the national (80,1%) and Western Cape provincial (81,4%) averages.
In George, the top three schools are Outeniqua High with 99,7%, York High with 98,9% and Heatherlands High with 97,8%.
Heatherlands achieved an unbelievable improvement of 40,6%, from the previous year.
The other George schools achieved the following pass rates:
- Eden Technical High School – 81,4%
- Parkdene Secondary School – 81,2%
- Pacaltsdorp High – 76,6%
- Thembalethu High – 74,8%
- Jonga High School – 73,9%
- George High School – 73,1%
- Imizamo Yethu High School – 70,7%
District consistent
Jonkers said Eden and Central Karoo fared very well in comparison to other provincial districts. "We have consistently achieved above 80% for the past four years and our target is to break through 85% next year on the way to 90%. We also aim for no pass rates under 70%."
Three 100% pass rates
Three schools in the district achieved a 100% pass rate - Oakdale Agricultural High and Langenhoven High in Riversdale, and Heidelberg High.
"Outeniqua's 99,7% is remarkable considering that they have the highest number of candidates every year. Out of 307 learners, 306 passed. Heatherlands High is the story of the year with their 40,6% improvement. Only one learner did not pass. I am also extremely proud of Jonga High whose very first matric class achieved 73,9% under a team of young teachers with no experience. Well done."
Factors that impacted on the district's slightly lower pass rate included the growing number of new learners as well as a drop in the pass rates of George Secondary, Imizamo Yethu High, Themablethu Secondary and Beaufort West Secondary.
"We are still grateful that we do not have one under 60% pass rate and only three under 70%. A total of 5 930 more learners achieved Bachelor and diploma pass rates in the district."
Circuits
- The top performing circuit is Riversdal (Circuit 1) with 91,93%.
The rest of the circuits achieved the following pass rates:
- 2nd: Mossel Bay (Circuit 2) - 86,76%
- 3rd: Oudtshoorn (Circuit 5) 86,03%
- 4th: George (Circuit 3) - 86,16%
- 5th: George (Circuit 8) - 80,91%
- 6th: Beaufort West (Circuit 7) - 80,62%
- 7th: Knysna/Plettenberg Bay (Circuit 4) - 82,92%
- 8th: Oudtshoorn, Uniondale, Dysselsdorp, De Rust area (Circuit 6) - 77,95%
Jonkers said the celebration around matric results is one of hope where rich and poor and all races celebrate together. "The sight of parents forgetting their arthritis and jumping for joy over their children's achievement is what motivates me and makes my work worthwhile."
