GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - The South Western Districts Motorcyclists' Association (SWDMCA) held a meeting on Saturday, 23 July, to reflect on the activities of the various clubs affiliated to the association.
The president of SWDMCA, Johann van Tonder, said the association's geographical area is the Southern Cape, including Plettenberg Bay to Swellendam and Witsand, the Klein Karoo and the Karoo including Beaufort West and the Langkloof.
There are 42 clubs affiliated to the SWDMCA, of which 37 are currently active. There are also non-council affiliated clubs with one of them active.
Every six weeks the presidents and vice-presidents of the clubs gather to discuss all aspects of the clubs, accidents, members, charities and past and future events and runs. Other members are also encouraged to attend the meetings, but they socialise with one another during the meeting. The main activities of the clubs are organising runs and giving to charity.
After the motorcycle accident at the entrance of the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court this year after which a Grade 11 Point High School learner died of her injuries, the association organised a run and petitioned for the entrance to the court to be closed.
The association donated R7 000 towards the learner's medical expenses. Subsequently the road was closed and traffic redirected. The members also support CANSA, Water Warriors, farmers, crèches, schools, blanket runs and jacket runs.
The council of presidents attends to the safety of club members and the discipline of members that step out of line. It also coordinates runs organised by the different affiliated clubs.
