OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Three men have been sentenced to a combined 36 years in prison for drug-related offences following their conviction in the Oudtshoorn Regional Court on Thursday, 10 September.
Western Cape provincial police management has welcomed the lengthy sentences, noting that the case highlights police diligence in investigating drug-related offenses.
The case dates back to 1 April 2025, when Oudtshoorn police members were patrolling Johan Gelderblom Street at about 22:45.
According to police, the members spotted an Opel Corsa leaving a suspected drug outlet. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, resulting in a high-speed chase.
During the pursuit, police noticed a parcel being thrown from the passenger window. After stopping the vehicle, the members returned to the area where the parcel had been discarded.
A search of a red backpack allegedly revealed 1 943 Mandrax tablets and 27 half tablets. Police also seized R12 000 in cash, which was believed to be the proceeds of the illicit drug trade.
Four suspects were arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. One of the accused subsequently died, leaving three men to stand trial.
Roberto Khumalo (30) and Ziphozihle Diamond (35) were each sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, while Emile Spogter (26) received a six-year prison sentence. The Opel Corsa and the cash were forfeited to the state.
The investigation was conducted by the Western Cape Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (OCI) Narcotics Unit.
Police said the convictions and sentences should serve as a warning to those involved in the trafficking and distribution of drugs, particularly in vulnerable communities.
