SAA has denied for years that it has been helping Mango, despite being its only shareholder.
But over the weekend, in a statement about the resignation of Mango Chief Executive Officer Nico Bezuidenhout, it said that it had provided Mango with ten aircraft in a subsidised lease.
The Free Market Foundation’s Jayne Boccaleone says this means taxpayers are thus subsidising both SAA and Mango.
“It’s the poor in the society who suffer while we taxpayers fork out to fly those who don’t need it. Every time you get a cheap seat on Mango, who is paying for it? It’s the poor who can barely afford a bicycle, let alone fly.”
