GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality Disaster Management Centre has issued a stark warning to all motorists, pedestrians, and residents across the region: Turn around, don't drown!

With severe weather conditions bringing heavy rain and potential flash flooding to the Western Cape, authorities are emphasizing that even shallow, seemingly harmless water can turn fatal in seconds.

The hidden power of moving water

Many drivers underestimate the immense force carried by fast-moving water. Disaster management officials highlight the following critical safety thresholds:

15 cm (0.5 feet): Fast-moving water at just ankle depth exerts enough force to knock over and carry away a fully grown adult.
30 cm (1 foot): Water at this depth generates up to 250 kg of lateral force—enough to knock a standard passenger vehicle off course, lift it off the road, or carry it away entirely.
45 to 60 cm (1.5 to 2 feet): Deeper water generates an upward force of up to 680 kg and a lateral force of 450 kg. This is more than enough power to float and sweep away large vehicles, including SUVs, bakkies, and heavy trucks.

Muddy water hides deadly hazards

Officials strongly advise against attempting to cross any flooded roadway, as muddy water completely hides hidden hazards. Submerged roads frequently suffer severe washouts, creating hidden drop-offs and deep holes capable of instantly trapping vehicles.

Once water reaches a vehicle’s chassis, the car loses traction and begins to float, allowing lateral currents to drag it into deeper water before the driver can react.

Avoid floodwaters: If you approach a flooded road or bridge while driving, turn around immediately and seek an alternative route.

Exercise extreme caution at night: Evacuating or driving in the dark is exceptionally dangerous as washed-out roads and deep water are nearly impossible to see.
