MOTORING NEWS - The RAF has reminded road crash victims that while financial compensation cannot reverse the physical, emotional and financial trauma caused by a motor vehicle accident, it is intended to provide support, dignity and stability for those affected.
Many claimants face life-altering injuries, the loss of loved ones, permanent disabilities or reduced earning capacity, which can have a lasting impact on their ability to support themselves and their families.
Settlement payments are designed to assist claimants in rebuilding their lives and meeting their future needs.
However, the RAF cautions that these funds require careful planning and responsible management to ensure they provide meaningful support over the long term.
RAF pays billions in compensation
Between October 2024 and May 2026, the RAF paid approximately R79.33 billion in claims and related obligations, benefiting more than 310 000 claimants.
During this 20-month period, payments to attorneys amounted to R57.54 billion, while approximately R4.48 billion was paid directly to claimants.
While these settlements provide essential financial relief, the RAF warns that some beneficiaries may experience financial difficulties if their compensation is not managed carefully.
Claimants urged to plan for the future
The RAF says settlement payments intended to provide long-term financial security can be quickly depleted without proper planning and informed decision-making.
Claimants are encouraged to carefully consider both their immediate needs and future financial responsibilities before making major spending decisions. Where possible, they should seek independent and reputable financial advice to help protect their financial wellbeing and that of their families.
The Fund also warns that claimants who receive large settlements may become targets for fraudsters, scammers and criminal syndicates looking to exploit vulnerable individuals.

The RAF advises claimants to remain cautious after receiving their settlements and avoid sharing details about their compensation publicly.
Claimants should also be wary of unsolicited investment opportunities, requests for financial assistance or individuals offering unrealistic promises of financial returns.
Any suspicious activity should be reported to the relevant authorities.
To avoid falling victim to fraud or misinformation, claimants are urged to verify claim information only through the RAF’s official communication channels, including the RAF Contact Centre and authorised RAF platforms.
