Day one went off without any problems, as both teams managed to get in a full day of cricket, which culminated in the home team completing their first innings – amassing 263 runs, with Hashim Amla top scoring with 53.
Problems started on the second day when the Kiwis were meant to get their first innings underway – they lost their first two wickets for just 15 runs and then the rain reared its ugly head.
No more cricket would be played for the rest of that day as the conditions covered the ground in water that made life increasingly difficult for the ground staff to deal with.
That would be the theme for the next three days as the outfield suffered an irreparable soft underfoot.
