Cango Wildlife Ranch has long been a go-to spot for nature lovers staying in Oudtshoorn. It was established in 1977 as Cango Crocodile Farm and was soon developed into a conservation area that was to house cheetah and other endangered species, as well as crocodiles. The ranch now boasts more than 90 species of animal.
On 20 October 2018, Cango Wildlife Ranch welcomed five new members to its community. They were cheetah cubs, two female (named Topaz and Thandi), three male (named Thane, Troy and T’Challa) , born to cheetahs Pippa and Parker at the Jill Bryden Cheetah Reserve, which is based at the ranch.
The birth of these cheetah cubs with the secure boundaries of Cango Wildlife Ranch is an extremely positive occurrence when one considers the saddening endangerment of cheetahs. As the ranch itself has stated, “with less than 7100 cheetahs left in the wild, an international self-sustaining cheetah population in professional and ethical human care is becoming even more important with the continued decrease of animal numbers in the wild.”
Mari-Lize Warrington, Marketing Manager for the ranch, also explained, “we are excited to see the ripple effect their presence will have on inspiring every visitor we welcome at Cango Wildlife Ranch. They have an immense purpose in the grand scale of teaching the world about the plight of the cheetah, who, without everyone’s help, will not survive ‘the-era-of-mankind”.
The topic of endangered cheetahs is not contained within South Africa alone, but stretches to other parts of the continent and to the Middle East. As of December 2017, according to an article by The Guardian, Asiatic Cheetahs, based solely in Iran, are on the brink of extinction with only 50 left.
Aside from cheetahs, Cango Wildlife Ranch also keeps several types of big cat and wildcat, numerous species of birdlife and various reptiles, primates, fish and small mammals. Another newcomer to this colourful collection is a brown lemur, recently born to a female named Daisy and a male named Clyde.
Cango Wildlife Ranch is just one of many great reasons to visit Oudtshoorn. If you’re planning a move to this wonderful town, then check out its various property opportunities here.
