Yengeni drunk driving trial resumes

NATIONAL NEWS – The trial against African National Congress National Executive Committee Member Tony Yengeni is expected to resume in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The ANC heavyweight was pulled over in Cape Town’s CBD in 2013 for allegedly driving recklessly.

The State alleges that he had a blood alcohol level five times the legal limit.

Yengeni has pleaded not guilty to charges of drunken and reckless driving.

Last year, his defence formally requested a plea agreement, which usually results in a lesser sentence, but this was turned down.

Yengeni’s trial got underway late last year and is expected to continue Monday.
