The Pork Packers’ Abattoir in eastern Johannesburg, which supplies meat to Enterprise Foods, a company owned by Tiger Brands, has been slammed for using carbon dioxide to gas the animals.
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) is outraged, saying it’s inhumane.
CEO Marcelle Meredith says they presented alternative methods to Tiger Brands, which the company rejected on the basis that they would be more costly.
“They thought that there was absolutely no suffering of the pigs even though we had footage and sat together and tried to come to some agreement. It was just not possible.”
