NATIONAL NEWS - Many Twitter users have changed their names to include the term after a comment by the president about white people during a recent 702 interview.
In an interview on 702 and Cape Talk with Xolani Gwala last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa said there was anger among young black people over the “lackadaisical” of white South Africans, particularly those with power.
White South Africans, particularly those to the right of the political spectrum, have responded to this by adopting the term in their Twitter names.
There are many Twitter users who have changed their names, with the highest profile example possibly singer and ToekomsVonk co-founder Steve Hofmeyr.
The adoption of the term is similar to the reaction by supporters of then presidential candidate Donald Trump to a comment made by his rival candidate Hilary Clinton. Clinton called half of Trump’s followers a “basket of deplorables”, continuing to say they were “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it”.
