Officials say the woman was accidentally shot in the hand as the driver threatened police with a handgun at a roadblock this morning.
Gauteng traffic spokesperson Obed Sibasa says the woman has been rushed to hospital
He says the taxi driver fled the scene and is still at large.
“The taxi driver was stopped and he pointed a firearm at police officials. The police opened fire, and shot the passenger by mistake in the hand. She is receiving medical attention.”
The incident took place while the Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) were carrying out operations at major taxi ranks ahead of the launch of EcoMobility month on Monday.
