NATIONAL NEWS - A woman (93) died when she was reportedly swept off her feet by waves which washed over a parking lot at Leentjiesklip in Wilderness on Saturday, 16 September.
Spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Craig Lambinon said the incident took place in the afternoon and it was the NSRI’s understanding that the woman’s death was “weather related”.
Lambinon says another person was injured and taken to hospital.
The identity of the woman who died has not yet been disclosed.
The Garden Route has been hit by gale force winds and rough seas, combined with the new moon spring tide, causing havoc in Mossel Bay, Herolds Bay and the coastline near George.
Beaches in the Garden Route area were closed and residents of Herold’s Bay and Victoria Bay had to be evacuated when massive waves led to coastal flooding, causing structural damage worth thousands of rands.
Several roads were also closed including all roads leading to beaches near George.
Residents were warned to stay away from beaches in the area during high tide.
