NATIONAL NEWS - On Wednesday 5 September the price of petrol will increase by 4,9c per litre, but other fuel prices will remain the same.
The increase is well below the increase of more than 20c/l predicted by the Automobile Association. In a media statement released today (Monday 3 September) the Minister of Energy, Jeff Radebe, announced that the petrol increase is needed to cater for the annual salary increase of forecourt attendants, cashiers and other administration staff.
He said South Africa has witnessed sustained increases in fuel prices for the past few months, which placed a strain on the consumers.
“Despite the fact that these increases were caused mainly by international factors, the department has decided to intervene temporarily for this month. This is a once off temporary intervention to provide some relief to motorists and consumers against fuel price hikes.”
