The tragic incident unfolded after an alleged speeding drunk driver in a BMW crashed into a Toyota Yaris. Three of the friends, 18-year-old Preston Denalin Naicker of Montford, Moorton resident, 34-year-old Delon Cadman and Byron Pillay, of Havenside, were declared dead on the scene by paramedics, while their other two friends, Deon Budram of Montford and a 26-year-old off-duty policeman of the Chatsworth Crime Intelligence Unit, survived the crash and remain in a critical condition at two different hospitals.
According to communications officer of Chatsworth SAPS, Lt Cheryl Pillay, the 21-year-old driver of the vehicle that crashed into the Yaris is under police guard at a local hospital on charges of culpable homicide, drunken driving and reckless and negligent driving. The families of the deceased are battling to come to terms with the untimely deaths of their loved ones.
