Two students caused controversy on social media after posting a picture of themselves in what appeared to be dark paint, and were subsequently accused of donning “blackfaces”.
One of the students took to social media to apologise for any offence the picture had caused, but emphasised that the pair had been dressed up as purple aliens for a space-themed residence party.
The university says that they have taken note of the trauma the incident caused the students involved and the outcry on social media, media and letters written to them over how they handled the matter.
The commissioner will report back to Maties management with his finding and recommendations.
Spokesperson for Stellenbosch University, Martin Viljoen, says Vice Chancellor Wim de Villiers is viewing the matter in a serious light.
“Self-evaluation and critical analysis forms part of the academic ethos of the university. Accordingly, the university will continue to seek the most constructive process to deal with the situation such as this one.”
