NATIONAL NEWS - South Africa is celebrating National Women's Day.
The first National Women's Day was celebrated on 9 August 1994, commemorating the 1956 women's march against the country's pass laws under the Urban Areas Act of 1950.
National Women's Day serves to create awareness regarding issues such as gender based violence, discrimination and domestic abuse.
As per the protest song sung by women during the 1956 protest, Wathint'Abafazi Wathint'imbokodo!, the phrase "you strike a woman, you strike a rock" is still representative of the strength and courage of women in South Africa.
Happy Women's day!
