Meningitis outbreak in Pretoria

NATIONAL NEWS - Pretoria could have an outbreak of viral meningitis after 21 suspected cases were reported from a single private hospital, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NCID) said.

Five of the cases have been confirmed as meningitis and all the 21 cases were of children sufferers.

The NCID said the children were admitted to hospital showing symptoms of fever and gastrointestinal tract symptoms.

“Following further enquiries, 18 additional cases of viral meningitis or encephalitis were reported from other private facilities in the Tshwane area,” the NCID said.

One of the cases was of a child older than ten years while three tested positive for enterovirus.
