NATIONAL NEWS - Organisers of the memorial service in George to mark the first anniversary of South Africa’s deadliest building disaster have been inundated with public offers of donations for the 62 victims and their families.
The service takes place on Tuesday 6 May from 13:30 to 15:00 at the main municipal hall in York Street, George.
On that fateful date a year ago, at 14:09, a newly built five storey apartment complex in Victoria Street came crashing down in less than five seconds.
A total of 62 construction workers were buried beneath 6 000 tons of concrete. 34 lost their lives and 28 survived - some with permanent injuries.
“When news of the anniversary spread, members of the public offered to lay flowers and wreaths at the cleared disaster site next to the municipal hall. However, it would be more meaningful to make cash donations instead to the victims and their families who are struggling to survive,” urge volunteers.
Rotary has created a secure payment option for donations.
