Thuli Madonsela's non-renewable seven year term ends in October.
“For the committee to be established, a motion has to be moved and adopted in the National Assembly,” Parliament said in a statement.
Parliament must also “facilitate public involvement in the process of recommending candidates to fill vacancies on the Institutions Supporting Democracy”, which includes the Public Protector.
At least 60 percent of Members of Parliament (MPs) in the National Assembly must give their backing to the candidate before the president confirms the appointment.
