Jongensfontein, Hessequa Municipal Area, 27 December - 21:00
After the wildfire was contained for several days, a change in the wind to a strong westerly direction caused hot embers to spot from within the burned area, igniting a new wildfire approximately 150 meters away.
This major ignition posed a serious threat to approximately 25 nearby thatch-roof houses. Aerial resources were reactivated, and extensive efforts were required to prevent the wildfire from spreading to structures.
The fire has since been brought under control, and mopping-up operations are currently underway.
Additionally, a counter-burn is being conducted to seal two unburned blocks. Light rain has also begun, and the cooler weather is expected to assist with mopping-up efforts throughout the night.
GRDM Executive Mayor Andrew Stroebel was at the scene for most of the day and would like to extend his thank yous to all the role players for their collective approach to protecting lives and infrastructure. Mayor Stroebel is featured in the video above too, which was taken moments ago.
