OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Investigators of the Oudtshoorn Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, brought several perpetrators of gender based violence and femicide to book in March.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies, the arrests during During Human Rights month, follow after the FCS recently embarked on tracing operations in Oudtshoorn and Dysselsdorp.
The operations started on Wednesday 16 March and ended on Friday evening, 20 March.
Investigators arrested three young men aged between 18 and 29 in connection with assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm.
The charges were laid by two juvenile complainants as well as a 34-year-old woman.
In another matter a 23-year-old suspect was arrested in Dysselsdorp in connection with an attempted rape charge relating to the violation of a 63-year-old male.
A 19-year-old male was arrested for having sex with a minor after he allegedly impregnated a 15-year-old girl.
All suspects will appear in court once formally charged.
Convictions
Police management applauded the team who was instrumental in securing sentences for those responsible for violating the rights of their victims.
The following sentences were imposed at the Oudtshoorn Regional Court during the past month:
- Xolani Mdingane (26) – Rape and Contraventions of Protection order - 10 years’ imprisonment
- Johnathan Minnie (36) - Assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm - 5 years’ imprisonment
- Two others were sentenced to 5 years in jail for statutory rape. The cases were reported to the Oudtshoorn police in 2019 and 2021 respectively, after it was discovered that two underaged girls had been impregnated.
The sentences were suspended for 5 years and includes three years correctional supervision.
Provincial police management commended the detection and prosecution teams who secured these convictions.
