OUDTSHOORN NEWS - A state-of-the-art ostrich nursery has officially opened in Middelplaas, just outside De Rust, reinforcing the Klein Karoo's reputation as a global leader in ostrich farming.
Owned by Zebara Farm's Vasin Govender and managed by Bernard Delport of Delport Broers, the nursery is dedicated to raising baby ostriches from just a few days old. It can care for up to 900 ostrich chicks at a time. This farm-specific facility is designed to improve sustainability, efficiency, and overall bird welfare.
Bernard and Johannes Delport Bernard are second-generation ostrich farmers.
The nursery incorporates green energy, smart water usage, intelligent heating and cooling, and efficient waste management. These are all seamlessly integrated with IoT technology, which allows live video monitoring via mobile apps.
"Together with Delport Broers' expertise in ostrich farming, we are proud to launch this facility, which marks a major step forward in sustainable ostrich farming," said Vasin Govender.
"With the latest rearing technology, we aim to improve the welfare of these birds, extend the breeding season, and contribute to the long-term success of the industry."
The Klein Karoo has a long-standing legacy and rich history in ostrich farming, and this nursery further underscores the region's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness. By integrating scientific advancements with traditional farming expertise, the facility sets a new standard for responsible ostrich rearing.
The nursery's launch event was attended by distinguished guests, including Oudtshoorn Mayor Johan Allers, Francois de Wet (Managing Director of Cape Karoo International), Piet Kleyn (SA Ostrich Business Chamber), and Anel Engelbrecht (Oudtshoorn Research Farm), alongside local farmers and industry leaders.
This new nursery is expected to serve as an educational hub for farmers and researchers, further solidifying the Klein Karoo's position as a leader in the global ostrich industry.
