NATIONAL NEWS - Simon's Town School's Lawhill Maritime Centre in Cape Town is inviting male pupils who will be in Grade 10 in 2016 to apply for a bursary to study at Lawhill. For the past 20 years, Lawhill has prepared hundreds of young people in Grades 10 to 12 for lucrative and exciting careers in the maritime industry by providing instruction in two specialist subjects, Maritime Economics and Nautical Sciences.
Interested bursary candidates must fulfil the following:
- A good pass in Grade 9 with at least 60% in mathematics and natural sciences
- Fluency in English (minimum 60% pass)
- An outstanding behavioural record at the applicant's current school
- A desire to study in a disciplined, maritime environment and an interest in a maritime career, which involves hard work and long hours
- A willingness to live in a hostel situation with others and obey the rules of Lawhill Maritime Centre, cheerfully
- Proof of community involvement
Be physically fit - candidates should be aware that ailments such as diabetes, epilepsy and inferior eyesight (including colour blindness) will discount them from following a sea-going career. Prospective deck officers need to pass the special SAMSA eyesight test.
Grade 9 pupils of all races interested in applying for a bursary are requested to send an application letter (including a contact telep-hone number) and a certified copy of their latest school report to info@lawhill.org or fax 086 551 7095. The closing date for applications is 21 September.
The Lawhill Maritime Centre and bursary sponsors reserve the right not to make any award of the bursary and reserve the right not to enter into correspondence about the decisions in this regard.
