LIFESTYLE NEWS - It was assumed that the hot toddy is one of those home remedies, like chicken soup, that works because it is comforting, helps us sleep and because we believe it works.
It turns out a hot toddy soothes a cold from a scientific perspective as well.
The spices stimulate saliva, helping a sore throat and the alcohol helps fight infections and the growth of microorganisms. Alcohol is a decongestant – it dilates the blood vessels, making it easier for your mucus membranes to deal with infections.
Combined with the honey, lemon and steam emanating from the drink, a hot toddy it is the perfect concoction for helping to clear up cold symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic warm liquids can be soothing and help ease congestion, while lemon water with honey can “loosen congestion and help prevent dehydration”.
INGREDIENTS
2 Tbls brandy or whiskey
1 cup boiling water
1 Tbls honey
1 Tbls lemon juice
A stick of cinnamon or a star anise
METHOD
Add boiling water to the rest of the ingredients. Stir until the honey has melted. Cuddle up in bed and drink your toddy while it’s still hot.
Other possible additions are rooibos tea, fresh ginger, lemon zest or other spices like cloves and nutmeg.
