OUDTSHOORN NEWS - Nature as a metaphor for the human condition and a blueprint for survival is the inspiration behind Janet Dixon's new exhibition, Hope, & the Nature of Being Human, which will be held from 5 to 7 December.
This collection of small artworks, rich in textures and layering, contrasted by the thorny harshness and strength of the Karoo biosphere, reflects the cycles of struggle and growth of the ordinary people of Oudtshoorn, which she encounters on her path. She feels that the hope of this nation lies in the innate resilience and creativity of everyday folk.
There is a special Open Studio event at ArtKaroo ArtHouse, 237 Jan van Riebeeck Road on Thursday, 5 December, from 18:30 to 19:30 with a 10% discount on the opening evening.
There will also be a studio sale of Jante's older works. The exhibition will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday, (6 and 7 December) from 09:00 - 21:00.
Dixon is a self-taught artist, mother and medical doctor in Oudtshoorn and has had many exhibitions of her work as well as artists from all over the country. Her work is informed by her environment, arid but rich in flora, and her everyday experiences with people.
She is a versatile artist, working primarily in oils and acrylics, was the instigator of Artists of Oudtshoorn and owner of ArtKaroo gallery. The gallery now operates online and by appointment, from ArtKaroo Stay: her artist's studio, home and gallery.
" Nature, my wise muse, is a great leveller of all men, and to her I return cyclically in my work to inspiration gleamed there, sometimes brutal, but always beautiful, peppered with the magic of sacred geometry and the secret of life, " she said in her gallery while working on one of her paintings.
While talking to the Oudtshoorn Courant, Dixon not only shares her views on the hidden beauty in the arid surrounding environment but also reminds one that we are surrounded by people, just normal people, who influence our lives and give hope in times of difficulty and uncertainty.
