GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Although it is only the beginning of August, there are indications that temperatures are rising. Don't be surprised if days are warmer than the past weeks, but also remember it will not be the end of winter.
Days are already longer and the sun is rising earlier.
On Tuesday 1 August, head of Garden Route Disaster Management Gerhard Otto said the storm of the previous weekend was not as bad as expected. The worst of it was off-shore. "I always believe when you plan for the worst, everything is easy," he added.
There were power interruptions in Oudtshoorn and Plettenberg Bay because of trees falling on power lines. Electricity was restored within a day.
Otto said, as predicted, it is the wettest winter in 12 years in the Garden Route. Normally the region gets its rain in October, but, he said, "it is winter rain like in other parts of the Western Cape."
He said what we are experiencing now is probably the last part of winter. It might start clearing up and day temperatures will lift in the coming days.
The water situation in the region is good and there is no reason for concern at this stage.
