OUDTSHOORN NUUS - A 35-year-old man was arrested in Beaufort West on Sunday 24 May when 1,9 tons of dagga was discovered in his truck.
According to Capt Malcolm Pojie, the communications officer of the Southern Cape, the police received information which was followed up immediately resulting in the stopping and searching of a truck in Donkin Street at about 16:35.
During the search of the vehicle 56 bags of dagga were discovered. The total weight of the dagga was 1,9 ton and the street value is estimated at R3,8-million. The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Beaufort West Magistrate's court on Tuesday 26 May.
The vigilance and determination of the police to curb the influx of drugs into the Western Cape also lead to the arrest of four more suspects on Monday morning 25 May at about 06:00. They were apprehended when their vehicle was stopped and searched on the N1 near Beaufort West. Dagga weighing 4,2kg and 3,1kg parcel of Tik were discovered in their vehicle.
One of the suspects is a South African citizen while the others come from West-Africa. They also appeared in the Beaufort West Magi-strate's Court on Tuesday.
According to Pojie the provincial management of the SAPD has repeated a stern warning to potential drug pedlars to refrain from transporting drugs as they will be caught and brought to justice.
"Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Maj Genl Thembisile Patekile, has commended the members involved for their dedication and commitment to bring these suspects to book," he said.
