GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT NEWS - The Southern Cape Police arrested five murder suspects over the weekend following a surge of violent crimes.
One 18-year-old suspect was arrested in Oudtshoorn, while four suspects were placed under arrest in George.
The suspects are in custody and will appear in court as soon as they are charged.
The murders are unrelated.
Violent incident
In Conville the police arrested two suspects, aged 16 and 17, following a violent incident in Lawaaikamp at about 23:45 on Saturday night. A 34-year-old victim sustained multiple injuries and died at the scene, while another sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is still at a very early stage and more arrests could be made as the investigation unfolds.
Two murders in Thembalethu
Thembalethu police arrested a 27-year-old suspect in connection with the of a 38-year-old man at about 06:00 on Saturday. Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim was assaulted earlier the day at Xiphu Street in Thembalethu. He sustained multiple injuries and was transported to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Investigation led to the suspect’s arrest at his residence. Circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated and more people are currently being interviewed.
A 29-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday in connection with the death of a man (37) from Asazani in Thembalethu. The police investigation revealed that the victim sustained a stab wound to the neck during an argument. He was transported to the George Hospital by ambulance on Thursday evening and was declared dead the following morning.
Oudtshoorn murder
The police in Oudtshoorn arrested an 18-year-old suspect on Sunday morning, following the death of an 18-year-old victim in Rosebank on Saturday, at about 21:30.
It is alleged that the victim and his friends were on their way to a shop when the suspect approached them. An altercation ensued and the victim sustained a stab wound to the chest.
He was declared dead by paramedics on the scene.
