Update
GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route District Municipality has issued an update on wildfires in the area, as at today, 29 December.
- Buffelsdrif (N9, George Municipal Area - previously referred to as Buffelsdrif in Oudtshoorn, this was incorrect) - wildfire stil active - teams are mopping up.
- Jongensfontein (Hessequa Municipal Area) - wildfire still active - mopping up
- Swartberg Pass (De Kombuys & Koos Raubenheimer Dam), Oudtshoorn Municipal Area).Consisting of wo flanks, west and east is unfortunately still showing signs of wildfire activity after clouds have cleared. This will require reinforced planning and placing of teams.
GRDM Executive Mayor Andrew Stroebel, again shared his thank yous to all role players:
"I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all firefighters who tackle fires in our district with courage and dedication, moving tirelessly from one fire to the next. My gratitude also extends to the pilots of helicopters and bombers, whose support is invaluable in our firefighting efforts. It is important to clarify that this aerial support will continue to be coordinated by the Garden Route District Municipality."
Role players who are now working tirelessly in collaboration with the GRDM and relevant Fire and Rescue Services personnel, include: Hessequa Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, and Rescue Services, Knysna Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, Southern Cape Fire Protection Association (SCFPA), Working on Fire & Kishugu (Ground Operations and Aviation), Savannah Helicopters, SANParks, CapeNature, Local farmers (Fire Management Units) and GRDM Fire Volunteers.
